Octopus fanciers have a question for you.

Is this not the geekiest poll ever?

I love the responses, but some people clearly didn't read the instructions. Only extinct marine invertebrates that you'd like to see resurrected! That means no Megalodon, and certainly no Liopleuridon, guys.

Opabinia or Hallucigenia, on the other hand, would be MY choices. I can't pick one; they're both fantastic.

In case you're unfamiliar with Opie and Hallie, this page can give you a quick intro to Cambrian sea critters. Here's two cute movies (a fast Opabina and a slow Opabinia) that kept Beanie occupied this morning while I did dishes. He listened to the Clash and watched the Opabinias groove.

Here's Ray Troll's interpretation of Opie and Hallie. Hallie is usually portrayed pointy-spines-up, these days. But looking at the picture, you can perhaps understand the confusion. Where is the head? What are the legs? Huh? Hallucinatory!

And here's Romeo A. Esparrago, Jr.'s version of Opie, Hallie, and the very intimidating Anomalocaris (Annie?). Most of the other Cambrian beasties were relatively small, but Annie grew to six feet long. Eep!

In closing, I think "Opabinia" would be a COOL baby girl's name! I'm totally alone in this, right?

Sure! Now we just have to get M to agree :-) Opabinia. I like it, we could call her Binnie. Binnie and Beanie!
